What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is basically a tiny, porcelain (or zirconia) cap that fits over a damaged tooth. Dentists usually place one to prevent further harm to the treatment site, reducing the risk of oral issues. The crown’s tooth-colored material also ensures it blends seamlessly with your smile.
Due to how they work, the best candidates for dental crowns have one (or more) of the following:
- Large & Failing Dental Fillings
- Highly Fractured Or Decayed Teeth
- Bite Problems That Need Correction
- A Tooth Treated with Root Canal Therapy
- An Existing But Damaged Dental Crown
The Dental Crown Process

Most patients can get dental crowns placed in just two dental visits. For the first one, our team “preps” the affected tooth so its final cap will fit. We’ll set the crown during the second visit a few weeks later.
Dr. Bollin will perform several steps at the preparatory visit. For starters, he’ll numb your mouth to ensure the “prep work” doesn’t hurt; the most you’ll sense from it is some pressure. Our team will then remove any old fillings before rebuilding your tooth’s missing structure. With that done, we’ll shave off some of your enamel to make room for your crown. Dr. Bollin can then take an impression of the prepped tooth, which workers will use to craft the final restoration in 2-3 weeks.
Our team will place your dental crown at the second session. Given the previous “prepping,” this process won’t take long; we’ll just check whether your restoration “blends” with your other teeth. We’ll then cement the crown, polish it, and send you off to enjoy your repaired smile!
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

With a dental crown from Sunset Avenue Dental, you’ll enjoy several great upsides. These include:
- Tooth Protection – Thanks to its strong material, a dental crown protects your tooth and withstands your bite’s force. It thus helps you avoid a root canal or tooth extraction later.
- Good Looks – Our dental crowns are made with porcelain or zirconia, so they blend seamlessly with your smile. Your friends and family won’t even notice you have one.
- Versatile Care – Dental crowns cover the tops of teeth, meaning they can fix cavities, chips, cracks, and more.
- Long-Lasting Results – The average dental crown has a lifespan of 5-15 years, and well-maintained ones can last for 30 years or more.
